The changing nature of families, their enduring and multi-faceted significance in society, and their value as a focus for the exploration of social change have ensured that families have remained a prominent focus of academic enquiry. Acknowledging the increasing diversity and complexity of families, this innovative book proposes a new conceptual framework for understanding families and other relationships that both challenges and attempts to reconcile traditional and contemporary approaches. Using the notion of 'boundaries', the book shifts thinking from 'families as entities' to 'families as relationship processes'. Emphasising the processes that underlie boundary construction and reconstruction suggests that the key to understanding family life is the process of relationship formation. The ideas of entity, boundary, margins and hybridity provide a framework for understanding the diverse, and often contradictory, ways in which families contribute to society.

[Repost at request] The Times Illustrated History of Europe by Felipe Fernandez-Armesto (Author) Publisher: HarperCollins (January 1996) | ISBN-10: 0723007241 | PDF | 32,6 M | Only Maps! Illustrations and full-color maps, this latest work from Oxford historian Fernandez-Armesto, editor of The Times Guide to the Peoples of Europe (Times Bks., 1994), is a fascinating companion volume to The Times Atlas of European History (HarperCollins, 1994). The author traces the cultural, social, and political evolution of Europe from its origins (c.10,000 B.C.) to the present day. The presentation is not a succession of facts and dates but a sweeping overview of European currents, interweaving art, ideology, and socioeconomic conditions. The narrative is very readable but would have been enhanced by chronologies similar to those used at the bottom of pages in The Harper Atlas of World History (HarperCollins, 1992. rev. ed.). While the absence of such chronologies may limit the usefulness of this publication as a reference tool, it is highly recommended for the history collections of most public and academic libraries. ?Europe Inc.: Regional & Global Restructuring and the Rise of Corporate Power? Belen Balanya / Ann Doherty / Olivier Hoedeman / Adam Ma'anit / Erik Wessel, Pluto Press | ISBN: 074532164X | 2 edition (Sept 20, 2003) | 288 pages | PDF | 13.3 M Europe Inc. provides the first real insight into the systematic ways in which transnational corporations - working through lobby groups - have succeeded in influencing a wide range of policies of the EU and other international institutions, such as the OECD, WTO and the United Nations. The authors cover the major players in these anti-democratic practices and analyze the structural and political factors which have enabled corporate political power to dominate. In their analysis of the EU's current neoliberal economic strategies -which involve promoting deregulation and privatization in virtually all areas and subordinating every policy field to the objective of international competitiveness - the authors focus on the activities of corporate lobby groups and corporate state alliances. These include bodies such as the European Roundtable of Industrialists (ERT), the Transatlantic Business Dialogue (TABD), the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), and the Association for Monetary Union of Europe (AMUE). The featured case studies examine corporate influence on transport, biotechnology, climate change policies, as well as key economic globalization projects such as the Transatlantic Economic Partnership and the Multilateral Agreement on Investment.
